Who are we?

We are a welcoming community of people from all over Sheffield united by our love of reading!

What do we do?

We meet weekly during term time to discuss a wide range of topics and literary texts (novels, poetry, drama and non-fiction). Our meetings are relaxed, informal and intellectually stimulating. We are distinct from a book club in that the sessions are led by a tutor. Each term, we decide on a theme as a group and the tutor provides a reading list. Examples of previous courses include: Irish Literature, the works of Jane Austen, and Detective Fiction.

When do we meet?

Wednesdays from 10-12 at Christ Church Dore Community Centre. Alternatively, you can join online.

How much will it cost?

Fees vary depending on the length of the course, but they are usually in the region of £40-60 (concessions available). This includes venue hire and materials such as handouts.

Choir website: doremalevoicechoir.com

Although the Choir celebrated its 58th Anniversary this year, its origins go back to a few years before 1964. In the late nineteen fifties a small group of ex-servicemen would meet at a bar for a beer and a sing. The numbers of this glee club started to grow and occasional outings to sing for servicemen’s clubs and other fellowships followed.  By 1964 numbers had grown to between 16 and 20 singers and the meeting place was switched to The Devonshire Arms in Dore, where Dore Male Voice Choir was formed.

The Choir currently has 74 members whose music repertoire covers the whole music spectrum from Opera, Musicals, Sacred and Spirituals to traditional folk songs. Visit our website (www.doremalevoicechoir.com) click on “Music to Listen To”, where a selection of the Choir's repertoire is available.

The Choir has also given performances in York Minster, The London Guildhall, The Royal Albert Hall, on radio and BBC TV.  Bi-annual overseas concert tours have taken place in many European countries. In 2017 they toured the Umbria region of Italy performing in the evening mass at St Peter’s in the Vatican.

In September this year the tour will be based in Padua, an ancient university city between Verona and Venice, with concerts in each of the cities. The big attraction for the Choir will be singing in the Mass in St. Mark’s in Venice.

So, are you looking for a new hobby, to meet new friends, experience the "buzz" of singing with like-minded people, help deserving causes, perform in public and go on concert tours?   If you can hold a tune why not audition for membership of the Choir. The Choir provides 2 uniforms and all the music, currently at a cost of less than £2 per week.

If you are interested, and have sung before, or if you have never sung but would like to try, come along and meet us.

The Easter Bunny is en route!

It's nearly Easter and what better way to get into the holiday spirit than recreating the Easter Bunny in paint!

In this fun 2.5 hour session, you will learn how to mix colours, paint application techniques, how to observe light, dark and colour, layering up to achieve depth and plenty more tips and tricks from an experienced artist.

What is a Paint Party?

A paint party is a fun and relaxed event where you can unleash your creativity! With a brush in one hand and a cuppa in the other, I’ll guide you step by step to recreate a painting, making it easy for everyone, whether you're a total beginner or already dabble in art.

Many people doubt their artistic ability, but with over six years of experience in education, I’ll help you gain confidence and discover your creative side. Not only will you leave with a beautiful painting of your own, but you'll also pick up skills to continue painting at home.

It’s the perfect way to socialise with friends and family while enjoying a nice cup of Yorkshire tea (or coffee) in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

I can also bring the paint party to you! Whether it’s a birthday, hen do, or special occasion, get in touch to plan your perfect creative event!

Paint Party – £25 per person

Includes:
2.5 - 3 hours of painting fun
Use of high-quality paints, brushes, and materials
An A4 canvas panel to paint and take home
Step-by-step guidance - no experience needed!
